Monday-Tuesday — 12-13 August 2019

I was up at 4:30 AM Monday to get to London Heathrow Airport for my flight but everything went smoothly and I headed off to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam where I changed for quick flight to Phnom Penh, arriving Tuesday at lunch time.

This is our Boeing 787 Dreamliner at London’s Heathrow Airport getting ready for the thirteen-hour flight from London to Ho Chi Minh City.
After checking in at Heathrow, I had plenty of time so I went up to an observation deck and spotted this now retired Concorde aircraft parked across the tarmac. Only Air France and British Airways flew them
When I got to Ho Chi Minh City I found these two cleaning ladies having their lunch sitting on the floor at one of the departure gates.
I had a six-hour layover in Ho Chi Minh City but finally it was time for us to board the propjet for the less-than-an-hour flight to Phnom Penh.
Another historical oddity, like the Concorde in London, was this row of revetments along the runway at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat airport. These walled enclosures were used to protect the Phantom F-4 fighters the U.S. used during the Vietnam War. I’m surprised they are still there.
A little later we were flying our approach to Phnom Penh. The river to the far left is the Mekong and the river to the right is the Tonle Sap. Phnom Penh is built at the junction of the Tonle Sap with the Mekong which heads south toward the sea at the upper left.
In the blink of an eye, we were back in Phnom Penh and as we neared the Maryknoll office, there was this happy security guard buying a hot ear of corn on the cob from a happy vendor
