Candyland

One of the stranger customs I have encountered in Cambodia is that of throwing a handful of wrapped hard candy into the street in front of a shop. It seems to happen once every week or two for the shops that do it. I don’t see any correlation with the type of the shop or day of the week or anything like that, so it must depend on the personal superstition or religious practice of the shopowner. A colleague said it had something to do with placating some kind of juvenile spirits.
