Day 7
10 March 2007

Today the tone for the FAB activities was more serious. In the morning, the group visited the Tuol Sleng torture center and one of the killing fields, then there was time for reflection, and then there was mass with the English-speaking community in the evening. After mass the group split up with various Maryknollers for supper. Ann and Dave Loretan (who works for the Maryknoll Lay Missioners) met with the MLMers to explain recent developments back in New York.

Breakfast (Photo by Jim McLaughlin Every morning the group has breakfast at a restaurant near their three hotels. There are a series of guest houses in the area and for thirteen people we needed to split them up into three establishments all next door to each other.
Visiting the Tuol Sleng torture center (Photo by Jim McLaughlin) The Khmer Rouge took many of their victims to Tuol Sleng, a former high school they converted into a torture center before they took them to the killing fields. Here Sokha, a guide, shows the group photographs taken of the victims before they were executed. From here the group went to one of the 120 killing fields where the torture victims were killed.
Reflecting at the Potter's House retreat center (Photo by Jim McLaughlin) For lunch, the group went to the Potter's House, a retreat facility on the edge of Phnom Penh. After eating there was time for reflection, meditation, and discussion about what the group had seen in the morning.
Meeting old friends at the evening mass At the evening mass, the FAB people were introduced to the community but before mass Judy and Dave Saumweber, who were Maryknoll lay missionaries in Phnom Penh for many years, had already started meeting people they had known before.
The English-speaking mass at World Vision Maryknoll is responsible for liturgy for the English-speaking Catholic community in Phnom Penh. We use the World Vision auditorium as our church. For the FAB group, it was one of the few times they got to be in air conditioning during their first week in Cambodia!
Meeting with Dave Loretan (Photo by Jim McLaughlin) Dave Loretan, one of the FAB group members, is a leader in the fund-raising department of the Maryknoll Lay Missioners, and because he was here, he offered to meet with all the MLMers to explain the current financial situation of our organization. Jim and Roberta McLaughlin hosted us at their house while the other FABers went to dinner with groups of other Maryknollers.
