Christmas in Cambodia 2006

Christmas Bazaar at Salesian Girls School

17 December 2006

Mother and child

The Salesians are known around the world for their excellent technical schools in poor and developing countries. The schools usually have the name Don Bosco (the Salesian founder) associated with them. Cambodia has two Salesian schools in Phnom Penh, one for boys and one for girls. I go to the girls' school on Friday mornings to have mass for the sisters who run the school. They invite me to come to their annual Christmas bazaar every year.

One of the performances

The stage at the bazaar saw a constant string of performances in the morning and again in the afternoon

One of the food stalls

The main attraction of the bazaar seems to be the food, ten or twelve little stalls serving a variety of dishes

Another food stall

A stall serving a variety of Khmer desserts

Cooking satay

Beef and sausage satays were cooked on the spot

Peeling sugar cane

Peeling sugar cane to be squeezed for a natural drink

Preparing noodles

A staple in every Asian country is a big bowl of noodles
