My plan in the beginning was to spend five or six days in Kentucky catching up with my mother who just moved to a retirement home and my brother who has been quite sick. The unplanned trip back to Cambodia disrupted those plans, however, and I ended up with just two nights in Kentucky. |
Tuesday, 29 July 2003 On the return from Cambodia, I flew to Bangkok on Monday morning, Cambodia time, and stayed overnight at the Maryknoll house there. The next morning I left at 4:15 AM to catch a flight to Tokyo and then on to Vancouver. In Vancouver I caught a final flight for the last leg of the return trip to Montréal, arriving there at 9:30 PM on Tuesday, 29 July. This time I was lucky to get a nonstop flight straight to Montréal, without the stops in Edmonton and Winnipeg that I had had going in the opposite direction.I was going to be in Montréal just eight hours, but three really good friends met me at the airport, took me to the deaf center for three hours sleep, and then took me back to the airport at 4:00 AM. |
Wednesday, 30 July 2003 I arrived at the Montréal airport at 4:30 AM and was met by Marie-Andrée, a lady from Montréal who had contacted me through my homepage inquiring about the Maryknoll AIDS project in Cambodia, specifically about the project involving adults with AIDS making quilts and selling them. A highly skilled quilt maker herself, she discussed with me some possibilities for expanding the sewing program in Cambodia. The U.S. Customs arrangement in Montréal is absolutely chaotic and resulted in our flight being 35 minutes late in departing. That meant I just barely caught the connecting flight to Louisville in Chicago. Unfortunately there wasn't time for the luggage to make the connection so I arrived in Kentucky without my suitcase. It came on the following flight, however, and was delivered to Pewee at 4:00 PM in the afternoon. My brother who has been sick picked me up at the airport and then we went to the retirement home and picked up our mother who will stay at Pewee with me until I leave. The rest of the day was spent making telephone calls and with visitors, and then catching up on some of the e-mail. |
Thursday, 31 July 2003 Today was a lot of running around. In the morning I went to the Church of Epiphany where the pastor, the organizer of the priests assembly I attended in June, had a stack of Cambodian money I had left at the assembly venue. While there I met Virginia Mason, my adopted sister who volunteers at Epiphany. On the way home I pulled into Walgreen's to check on phone cards, and just as I was getting out of the car, two women asked for help changing a flat tire. By the time I finished that, I was due back at home so I hurried there and picked up Mom and went to the rectory (photo) of St. Aloysius Church in Pewee Valley where the Altar Society was having a luncheon. I got to meet a lot of old friends there. Then in the afternoon I went to register for an absentee ballot for the fall elections and also bought a new ink cartridge for my printer. Back at home my sister Martha came down from Cincinnati and then we all went to the house of my brother Ray and his wife Tammy to eat supper. Joining us afterwards was my sister Mary and her daughters and my sister Jane and her children. A good day! |
