The Pchum Ben holiday is one of the major celebrations on the Cambodian Buddhist calendar. It is a three-day observance when the Cambodian people remember their deceased family and friends. And they have a lot to remember. Almost without exception, every family can list the parents, children, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles who died under the Khmer Rouge. The foreigners in Cambodia are not insensitive to this painful remembering, but because many Christians celebrate All Souls Day soon, some of the expatriates use this time as an opportunity for a long weekend. Normally I would go to the Pchum Ben observance at the Khmer parish in Phnom Penh but this year I went to Bangkok for a doctor appointment and two meetings. |
