The Trip to Bangkok

27 September 2008

Today I spent the morning at BNH Hospital getting a series of x-rays that proved I don't have any problems with a kidney that had appeared enlarged during my physical exam in July. Getting to the downtown hospital put me into the middle of the famous Bangkok traffic, and it lived up to its reputation, even on this Saturday morning.

View from the #163 bus

Bangkok is famous for its horrible traffic. It seems to have improved with the advent of the SkyTrain and the subway, but traveling on the streets needs extra time.

These pictures were taken on a Saturday morning when there might an expectation of less traffic because of the businesses closed on Saturdays and the kids not going to school.

Working above the traffic

This man works above all the traffic. There are so many wires on the poles he doesn't even need a ladder but just sits directly on the mass of wires!

Less traffic out of the city center

Out near the Maryknoll office, in the section along the river near Wat Yannawa, the traffic thins out somewhat and the cars and taxis give way to more motorcycles and tuk-tuks.

Selling cute toys to school girls

Outside a girls' school near BNH Hospital, a street vendor has all sorts of little toys and photographs that appeal to the young girls.

Street vendor selling flowers

This woman is selling flowers cut and arranged for offerings in Buddhist ceremonies.

One vendor selling flowers, the other roasted fruits

This woman on a main street has a greater assortment of the flowers used to garland statues and to lay on shrines.

Fast food on the street

On the corner of this alley, the emphasis switches from flowers to food, Thai fast food to eat on the run.
