Nippon Foundation in Cambodia

Visit of Nippon Foundation
to DDP

Charlie Dittmeier explaining the DDP project to Mr. Sasakawa

After visiting King Sihanouk, Mr. Sasakawa and his staff visited the Deaf Development Program office.  First Charlie gave them an overview of the program's work and the way the staff is structured.

Mr. Sasakawa asking questions

It happened that this week there were no students at DDP because the staff from the provinces are all in town for teacher training.  Mr. Sasakawa observed the staff training in the DDP classroom.  Here he is asking a question about Cambodian Sign Language and how it is used at DDP.

Learning about sign language linguistics

The third stop on the DDP tour was the sign language research department.  Mr. Sasakawa and his staff found this particularly interesting and asked many questions. They are funding sign language research not only in Cambodia but also in southern China, the Philippines, and Vietnam, but this a chance to see how the actual research is conducted.

Lodin explaining sign language research

Lodin, one of the DDP sign language researchers, explains the linguistic system for recording sign language in written form.  This system is taught by Dr. James Woodward who is coordinating the Nippon project and it is used in the four countries (Cambodia, southern China, the Philippines, and Vietnam) where the Nippon Foundation is supporting research in sign language.
