Meeting Day

This page features the reports from the various countries that we heard in the afternoon.

Larry Radice has kept Maryknoll abreast of world climate and environmental issues. Today he gave an overview of Maryknoll's involvement with ecological issues and reported on the COP21 conference that took place in Paris last year.

Brian Barrons, the superior for the Asia Region, spoke more about the goals of the Society's strategic plan.

In May the Hong Kong weather can be quite pleasant and it was nice to have seating arranged outside in a covered area for the break times.

Then the different pastoral groupings reported what is happening in their areas. Gerry Hammond reported for the Korea pastoral group.

All together about 55 Maryknoll priests and brothers attended this Asia Region assembly, along with some of the leadership from New York.

Ken Slayman is the coordinator for the Japan pastoral group and reported what is going on there.

The Maryknoll Asia South pastoral group includes Bangladesh, Cambodia, Myanmar, Nepal, and Thailand. Kevin Conroy reported for them, with a special emphasis on mental health issues that are present.

An important component of this meeting is anti-sexual abuse training which all US priests are required to receive every two years. That will happen tomorrow, but tonight the group watched the movie Spotlight about the unfolding of the sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic Church in Boston. We had planned to see it in the meeting room but the projector was indisposed so we defaulted to the TV room and the video player.

Brendan O'Connell taking advantage of the "stair chair" for getting between floors a little more easily. One of the reasons for proposing the sale of the Stanley House is that more older people are using it but to put in an elevator would be very expensive.

This is the third floor corridor of the main part of the Stanley House, looking from the "retreat side" through the doorway to the "Maryknoll side" where some of the Maryknollers live.
