Louisville, Kentucky

Various Happenings

1-10 August 2005

This trip was supposed to be my home leave but most of it was pre-empted by the church dates in Illinois, Minnesota, and Ohio.  But now for the last two weeks I am based in Louisville and able to do some of the fun things on my list.

Martha Dittmeier in Iroquois Park Every day that I am in Louisville I visit my mother at Sacred Heart Village, and sometimes we go for a ride. Here Mom is at the lookout in Iroquois Park, a favorite picnic destination when we were all kids.

Mom Dittmeier and friends 4 August 2005

Mom used to be very active in the parish in Pewee Valley and really misses her friends there so this morning we went to mass at St. Aloysius and then afterwards Mother and a group of her friends got together at Aunt Mary's house in Pewee.

Remodeling the old Dittmeier house After the get together with friends, we went across the street from Aunty Mary's house to our old house which we sold last year. David Klosterman, a family friend, is now remodeling our old house and was delighted to have the opportunity to show us the changes he is making. Click here for pictures of the changes.

Tom Ryan and Nancy Reynolds at the Catholic Deaf Office 5 August 2005

I have been trying to catch the staff of the Catholic Deaf Office in their office this week but they have been out running a sign language camp for children. Today, however, I was able to meet Deacon Tom Ryan and Nancy Reynolds, the CDO director in the deaf office at one of the diocesan office buildings.

Lost Boys of St. Thomas St. Thomas Seminary was open in Louisville from 1954 to 1970, and now 40+ years later, many of the former students and faculty are convening virtually on a mailing list on the Internet. The virtual gathering place was started by the class that entered St. Thomas in 1957 as a way of tracking down lost members of their class for a 45th reunion, and it acquired the name of the Lost Boys of STS. Some of the more energetic Lost Boys get together in a monthly First Friday devotion and I joined the group for the August meeting. (L-R) Art Baltes, Bob Stuempel, Charlie Dittmeier, and Bill Hartlage, with Steve Meyer taking the picture.

Graduation celebration at the Brownes' house 6 August 2005

Today we celebrated the graduations of Adam Browne (from Centre College) and Emily Browne (from Ballard High School) with a gathering at the Brownes' house. Click here for more photos.

St. Augustine Church in Louisville 7 August 2005

This morning I had mass at St. Augustine Church in Louisville, an African-American parish where the Catholic Deaf Office used to be located. I hadn't been back to a parish celebration for more than twenty years so it was a very happy return there today.
