Church Date in Nebraska

Red Cloud--Sacred Heart Church

Sacred Heart Church--Red Cloud, Nebraska

Sacred Heart Church in Lincoln

Pastor: Rev. Melvin Rempe
  • Wednesday (7 July)Lincoln to Red Cloud

    • I drove from Lincoln to Red Cloud, Nebraska which is in the center of the state, six miles north of the Kansas border. Red Cloud has a population of 1,200 and is especially famous as the home of Willa Cather, the author who wrote Death Comes for the Archbishop and other novels dealing with life on the prairies in the 19th century. It's a beautiful town with a magnificent main street that probably hasn't changed much since the late 1800s.
    • I had to rent a car for the time I am in Red Cloud. I was able to get an economy rate and a senior citizen discount, but the insurance for the car is $22 a day because I don't own a car in the US and do not have car insurance of my own. The insurance costs 1½ times the car rental! Maryknoll accounting department is going to have a duck when that bill goes through!
    • Fr. Rempe, the pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Red Cloud welcomed me and gave me two rooms in the rectory, more space than I have at home in Cambodia! He is a real thinker, with a lot of creativity spilling out of his conversations, and I've enjoyed talking with him.

  • Thursday (8 July)

Sacred Heart Church in Red Cloud, NebraskaSacred Heart Church is undergoing refurbishing, getting a new roof to fix chronic leaking problems. The church is 100 years old and has had several new roofs, but they were always added on over the old roofing, without taking off the earlier layers. This time they took off the old layers down to the original wood.

  • Friday (9 July)

    • Mostly I worked at the church today. I was finally able to get an Internet connection through my telephone card, after six days of futile attempts, and had plenty of e-mail to respond to.
    • This afternoon I took a walk around the business district of Red Cloud, with an extended stop at the Visitor Information Center. Click here for photos.
