Sacred Heart Church in Lawrence
Pastor: Rev. Dennis Hunt
- Saturday (17 July) -- Lawrence Parish
- From Red Cloud, it is an 18-mile drive to Lawrence, Nebraska where Fr. Dennis Hunt is pastor of Sacred Heart Church. It is by far the largest of the churches I have visited so far in this area and it has the only Catholic school still connected to a parish. The Saturday evening mass here was at 7:30 PM.
Assumption Church in Deweese
Pastor: Rev. Dennis Hunt
- Saturday (17 July)
- Fourteen miles from Lawrence is Deweese, Nebraska, a diminishing town which hosts the newest and most modern of the churches I have spoken at. Their Saturday evening mass was at 6:00 PM. As soon as that was completed, I hopped in the car and hurried back to Lawrence for their 7:30 PM liturgy.
- After both liturgies, I realized I did not have enough of the Maryknoll Today brochures I distribute at each mass so I drove back to Red Cloud and picked up another box, stopping at Subway (Red Cloud's only night life and fastfood outlet)for a sandwich on the way back. I didn't eat supper until 10:00 PM.
- Sunday (18 July)
St. Stephen Church in Lawrence
Pastor: Rev. Dennis Hunt
- The first mass of the morning was at 8:00 AM at St. Stephen Church three or four miles to the south of Lawrence. Originally the bigger parish, with its own school and cemetery, St. Stephen is now serves a much smaller population than the mother parish of Sacred Heart in the center of Lawrence.
- As soon as the mass was ended at St. Stephen, I jumped in the car and drove back to Sacred Heart Church in Lawrence for the 9:30 AM mass. Here I had set up two small tables near the back doors to display some of the books and other materials I had brought from Cambodia. Not many people stopped to look.
- When the Sacred Heart mass was ended, it was back in the car for the return trip to Assumption Church in Deweese where I had one of the masses last night. This second mass there was at 11:00 AM.
- I started getting a slight sore throat last night and it was a bit worse this morning although never terribly problematic. I was getting hoarse, though, and was glad I had only three masses to preach at. All of these churches have stationary microphones, and since I like to move around, up and down the aisle, while I am preaching, I have to speak much louder to compensate for the loss of the mike.
- On the way back to Red Cloud, I drove some of small, unpaved farm roads to get a better look at the countryside. It's beautiful terrain under the bright summer sun.
