Side Trip to Colorado

Driving Back to Red Cloud

The drive out to Boulder was a really enjoyable experience. I was able to follow U.S. 36 all the way from near Red Cloud to Boulder itself. On the way home I decided to drive U.S. 34 which is a few miles north of I-80 while U.S. 36 is a few miles south of it.

A cattle feedlotA point of interest for me on the return trip were the cattle feedlots I encountered. I had heard of them, but this was the first time I had seen--and smelled--them up close. Hundreds or thousands of head of cattle are kept in outdoor pens for months and slowly fattened up to bring a better price on the market.

Another feedlot, this one on more hilly ground. The smell of the feedlots is really something, an odor detectable over a wide area. The silos contain the grain used to fatten up the cattle.
