The Deaf Development Program in Cambodia is evaluating its education efforts, the teaching of basic literacy, simple mathematics, and sign language, for deaf people, and has invited a deaf education consultant, Ms. Kerstin Helmersson to come from Sweden to look at the DDP programs. Accompanying Kerstin as her interpreter is Ms. Åsa Helmersson. Both Kerstin and Åsa are teachers at the Manilla School for deaf children in Stockholm, Sweden.
Åsa Helmersson (red shirt) and Kerstin Olsson (white shirt) are greeted with flowers at the Pochentong airport in Phnom Penh. On the welcoming committee were (l to r) Neang Putheara, the DDP Program Manager), Peng Sinoun, the DDP sign language Intepreter, and So Sereyvuth, the Assistant Program Manager, along with Charlie Dittmeier.
After getting settled in a hotel and taking a short exploratory walk around their new neighborhood, the rest of the day was free. Then in the evening Åsa and Kerstin were welcomed with a dinner at a nearby restaurant. Joining the group were Justin Smith, a program adviser, and Robert Farmer and Sakong, both from Australia, who are presenting a drama workshop for deaf young people for three months this year.
