Usually the International Day of Disabled Persons is celebrated in connection with two days of HandiSports, sporting events for people with disabilities. For people with disabilities who can't participate in the team activities of the HandiSports alternative "popular games" are offered. Here blindfolded contestants try to smash bags of water with a stick while blindfolded. (Unfortunately, this year the HandiSports were not able to be held.)

For people with disabilities whose legs are OK, sack races prove to be a favorite every year. Simple games are quite attractive here where people are not exposed to Nintendo and X-Boxes and other normal--and expensive--entertainment found in more developed countries.

The tug-o-war is another popular game, played with a lot of enthusiasm and energy! Notice all the participants are wearing International Day of Disabled Persons T-shirts. The shirts are one way various NGOs can help sponsor the yearly celebration.
|
Another simple game was tossing plastic balls into wicker baskets set about five or six meters away.

Noticeably absent this year with the cancelation of the HandiSports were any activities for people in wheelchairs. Or maybe I missed them because several activities were always going on at once. These young women were spectators for the popular games.
