June, 2003
The Maryknoll Deaf Development Program teaches sign language and literacy to deaf people in Phnom Penh and four provinces. In each classroom, two teachers--one deaf and one hearing--work as a team.

On the left is Virak, the team leader for all the DDP teachers, and on the right is Siya, a hearing teacher in Svay Rieng.
Siya teaching the deaf studentsSiya teaches the class in Svay Rieng with her deaf counterpart. Their classroom is in terrible disrepair and we hope to get money to fix the holes in the walls and maybe provide electricity.
Teachers with DDP staffMao Tsar Medh and Sinoun speak with the two teachers in Svay Rieng after the students have gone home at the end of the class day. The program in Svay Rieng was restarted in September, 2002 after a three-month suspension to allow for teacher training.
Meeting with provincial education officialsPart of the program when traveling in the provinces is to meet with school principals and provincial and district education offers.  Here Mao Tsar Medh and Virak meet with the principal of the school where the deaf classroom is located and two officials from the Ministry of Education.
