These are scenes from main street in the little Svay Rieng town. |
Ferries are a part of life in Cambodia which has many rivers and few bridges. This is the ferry we used, about an hour out of Phnom Penh, on the way to Svay Rieng. There are two ferries making continuous trips back and forth at this crossing. The white four-wheel drives are the most common vehicles on the roads outside the city, the favorite transportation of the NGOs and UN organizations. |
The small town where the deaf classroom is located in the local primary school has this main street. The little wooden stand on the left is a "gas station" for the motocycles which are the main vehicles on the road. Gas is sold in two-liter plastic Coke bottles. |
A little girl and her littler brother stare at the visitors as they play behind the "gas station." Their mother probably sells the gas and also squeezes sugar cane juice with the big silver pressing device with the large hand crank. The wooden fence around the little tree keeps the wandering cows and goats from eating it. |
A little boy looks at some of the goods hanging in a little roadside stall along the main street. Such stalls usually sell vegetables or pickled eggs, or perhaps shampoo, cell phone cards, cigarettes, candies, and packages of instant noodles. |
