- Thursday (27 May) -- I could check in with United Airliines at 5:00 AM in the transfer area and got my three boarding passes for the rest of the trip. I was pleasantly surprised to see that I am now "Premier Executive" class with United because of all my trips last year, and this allowed me to go into the United lounge and get a pastry and glass of orange juice before we boarded at 6:30 AM.
The trip to Tokyo was uneventful, and I had just enough time to get from the arrival gate to the new departure gate where the flight to Chicago was already boarding. The plane was full. At this time of the year, just as the schools are closing in Asia, many families are heading for the US for the summer to visit the grandparents and take their vacations at "home."
- I arrived in Chicago on time and had about an hour before the flight left for Louisville at 3:40 PM. As usual, we were delayed leaving O'Hare because of weather between Dayton and Indianapolis which required air traffic control to rearrange flights to avoid the storms and other aircraft. I arrived in Louisville at 6:30 PM and was greeted by my sister Jane. (Thanks, Jane!)
- Jane said Mom was anxious to see me so we went straight from the airport to Sacred Heart Village where we visited for a half hour and then Jane and I grabbed a sandwich for supper.
- As we drove toward Pewee Valley from Louisville, we noticed the sky getting darker and darker, and finally we turned on the car radio and learned that tornadoes were in the area. By that time we were in the middle of driving rains and strong winds, but the radio was not warning of tornadoes in our immediate vicinity although they were twenty miles away. We got to Pewee Valley and waited in the family house till things calmed down, learning from television that tornadoes had touched down twenty miles behind us and fifteen miles ahead of us.
