The time spent in Nebraska this year is also my vacation time so I took a side trip to Boulder, Colorado to see a seminary-era friend, John Hoffman. I didn't have any real responsibilities during the week at the parishes in Nebraska so it was a good opportunity for something fun.

  • Cattle in KansasI drove south from Red Cloud into Kansas to pick up U.S. 36. On the edge of Red Cloud, I saw a doe emerging from the woods, and in the same spot three wild turkeys sauntered across the road. Further along the route I also saw antelope, prairie dogs, buffalo, and herds of cattle at home on the range.

  • U.S. 36 in KansasHighway U.S. 36 is straight as an arrow and goes from right below Red Cloud all the way to Boulder. It was a delight to be able to travel along a non-Interstate highway and catch some of the character of the countryside in Kansas and Colorado. There was almost no traffic and very few places to eat or get gas.

  • A combine harvesting wheatThe first part of the trip saw corn fields in Kansas just like those in Nebraska, but gradually the crops changed to mostly wheat. The wheat crop is generally ready for harvesting and combines like this one were hard at work in many places. Further west, the fields of wheat gave way to more and more open range with cattle and horses and antelope grazing the mid-summer grass.

  • I left Red Cloud at 7:00 AM and arrived in Boulder at 3:30 PM (with a one-hour time change) after a pleasant trip with plenty of time to stop and look around and take pictures.
