Maryknoll's gift is the ability to go to an area with needs, look around to see what is most pressing, and then seeking to address the needs with the resources available. In that way, Maryknoll got involved with blind people in Cambodia, leading eventually to Fr. John Barth setting up the Takeo Eye Hospital to train basic eye doctors and eye nurses to work among the poorer rural populations. The hospital was later turned over to Caritas and the Daughters of Charity who found funding for a new building which was dedicated on 6 April 2010 by King Sihomani. |
Early on Monday local contractors brought in wagonloads of chairs, enough for about 800 people, and materials for the stage. |
A lot of bunting was hung around the entrance to the new building complex. Unfortunately after this young man finished his work, the sign was taken down and repainted overnight to correct the spell of "hospital." |
The lunch on Tuesday was catered for the guests and the patients of the hospital. On Monday crews from the restaurant were setting up tables and washing the plates and utensils to be used the next day. |
Because the king was coming, a lot of police and security officials were involved. Late in the afternoon the different branches of police and military met to coordinate their plans. |
Toward the end of the afternoon, a fire truck was brought in to spray the dirt area where the chairs were set up to help control the dust. After dark the truck returned and sprayed water a second time. |
As the sun set, the crew working on the stage were still hard at work. Other crews setting up royal pictures and insignia and trappings had to wait until the stage workers had created the basic platform before they could do their own work. |
