Ecumenical Easter Service

23 March 2008

Every year the larger international English-speaking Christian communities have joint Easter and Christmas services. In December, 2007 the Christmas service had to be canceled because of problems getting permission to use the Crystal Dome, a public but government-controlled facility, one of the few that is large enough to hold the Christian service.

At the present time, the government is very reluctant to let the Christians use large facilities even though they profess freedom of religion in Cambodia which has a state religion of Buddhism. First, the government is paranoid, afraid of any gathering of anyone except ruling party loyalists. Secondly, some Christian groups have upset the Buddhist hierarchy with aggressive evangelization and the government's reaction has been to limit and discourage Christian activities in order to maintain favor with the Buddhist clergy whose support the government needs in the lead-up to national elections in July.

We applied long beforehand to use the Crystal Dome but the permission was not forthcoming and experienced insiders advised that final approval might not be given until the day before. Actually permission to use the Dome was granted four days before Easter.

Sherry Lile, a minister from the United States, was the leader of the Easter service this year.

Sharon Wilkinson from England was a representative of the English-speaking Catholic community and read a scripture selection.

The congregation

About 600 chairs were set up in the Crystal Dome to accommodate the crowd which is always quite large.

Very obvious wedding decorations
The heart-shaped backdrop was the result of the Easter Sunday morning service being squeezed in between a Saturday night wedding and a Sunday night wedding.  Cambodian aesthetics would not see any clash between the backdrop and a religious service.
Pastor Graham Chipps preaching

Graham Chipps from Australia is the pastor of the International Christian Fellowship and spoke at the service using the theme "The Resurrection of Jesus Christ changes everything!"

Preparing for a wedding banquet
Meanwhile, outside the glass walls of the Crystal Dome...  Workers chop up vegetables for the wedding banquet to be held in the evening. A facility like the Crystal Dome, although designed for events like wedding banquets--its most common usage--would not have a kitchen.
More banquet preparations

More banquet preparation. At least these workers have the food off the ground although there is scant other attention paid to hygiene.

Repairing the pavement

And a few feet away, a workman spends his Easter Sunday morning laying new bricks in the courtyard of the Crystal Dome.
