It is hard to imagine how empty Phnom Penh is! The locals all go to their home villages. The foreigners head to Sihanoukville's beaches or, if they have more money, to Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh City.
This man isn't going anywhere and is just passing the day sitting alone on the sidewalk outside his house and shop.
The new year is a time for gift-giving and we Maryknollers living at the office weren't forgotten! One of our guards gave me these two packages of sweet sticky rice, wrapped as securely and efficiently as any commercial product. We could learn something from the traditional skills of the local people. Nothing is wasted and there is no non-degradable trash.
On the street in front of the Maryknoll office, some kids play in the empty street with a background of Cambodian flags set out for the holidays. Cambodians are a flag-waving society, like the United States. |
