This is Street 163, normally a very busy street full of traffic, near the Maryknoll office. Today it was basically empty and all its shops were closed.
Security guards have a difficult life. They work 12 (or more) hours per shift for very little money. And then there's the boredom. This man is greeting the early morning after a long night of sitting in front of a building supply center.
Another guard in front of another building supplies company.
This guard is protecting a micro-finance institution.
This is a small hospital. All the patients and staff have gone to the provinces and only the guard remains.
This gas station is open but there aren't many customers today.
There were a few small shops open today, mostly the kind selling drinks or convenience items like this store. Figuring he was going to be open anyway, the owner also added a few gift baskets (on the table) for those going to visit a family or friends.
Most of the shops that were open today were the type where the family lives behind or above the shop and so, if they didn't go to the provinces and were staying home, they might as well open for the odd customer who might come. This woman probably never takes down the shoe displays--it's too much trouble--and just sleeps with her stock at night and so she's open, too. |
