Retreat Day No. 2

9 January 2014

The second full day of retreat continued apace. In the afternoons we have some special presentations for those who are interested while others are encouraged to silence and reflection.

Morning prayer outside
Today Sr. Len organized the morning prayer outside for a change of venue.
John Beeching and Joe Thaler
After the prayer and before the first conference, John Beeching and Joe Thaler had their own conference.
The first retreat session
In the first session of the morning, Nonie continued her pattern of a song, then a reading from Deep River, then comments, a poem, and a blessing.
Break time
The break time is always a pleasant interlude, one of the times when everyone is together but in a more unstructured setting that allows for all sorts of conversations.
Helen Graham
During the second morning session, Sr. Helen Graham was attentive. Nonie would often check some of her scripture insights with Helen who has previously presented to us as a scripture scholar in her own right.
Liturgy before lunch
For our liturgies, we move the chapel's pews to one end so that we can be gathered around the altar. Today Fr. Kevin Conroy presided for a liturgy organized by Cambodia.
Lunch outdoors
The dining room is right next to the breezeway connecting the two residence wings so often people eat meals outside, enjoying the unusually pleasant (less hot!) weather. L-R: Mary Grenough, Arlene Sale, Eileen Brady, and Helen Graham.
Session on climate change
After lunch Fr. Larry Radice, Maryknoll's representative and expert on issues of climate change, gave an update on what has developed in the last two years.
Sami Scott and Bob Wynne
Bob Wynne had to stay overnight in the hospital for a heart irregularity and just arrived at the retreat today. Right away he tended to his coffee-making responsibilities that Sami Scott had been minding for him.
Night prayer in chapel
For night prayer, the chapel was dark and Sami Scott had reflective music on her flute before and afterwards.
