Symposium Day 2Today was the second day of the symposium and centered on two major talks, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon, both followed by small-group discussions. The Maryknoll Sisters hosted the gathering on this second day at their center. |
For each day of the symposium, a Maryknoller was chosen to preside. On this Saturday, Larry Parr, a lay missioner working in El Salvador, was responsible for introducing the speakers. |
The first speaker today was Bishop Alvaro Ramazzini, the bishop of Huehuetenango Diocese in Guatemala. He is well-known throughout Latin America as a strong advocate for human rights and a defender of the poor. |
After Bishop Ramazzini's presentation, the 250 participants discussed the issues and challenges he raised in fifteen small-group discussions arranged throughout the sisters' center. |
Each of the fifteen small-groups reported back to the full group after each talk, and then were was time for questions and comments. |
In the afternoon, the speaker was Dr. Anna Tibaijuka from Tanzania. She attended Maryknoll schools as a young girl and used her education to rise through the ranks as a leader in her country. She serves in a cabinet-level position in the government there and is also part of several groups at the United Nations. |
Because of the number of symposium participants, the talks were presented in the main chapel which is fitted with antiphonal or choir stall style seating. |
