Trip to United States

19 June to 20 July 2012

25 June 2012 / Monday

Essexville, Michigan to Maryknoll, NY

St. John the Evangelist Parish is a healthy and vibrant community but it has seen its numbers drop in the last few years.
St. John's Church
On two mornings each week, Monday and Friday, the parish has a prayer and communion service led by some of the lay ministers of the community. Afterwards some stay for coffee and doughnuts and to play cards.

The original parish rectory was quite large because it was built for a community of priests who used to administer the parish. Now with only one priest, the rectory has been changed to offices and the pastor lives in this small house on a nearby street.

The pastor was away at a workshop while I was at St. John's but he left his bicycle in the garage and I used it to explore the Essexville area. There are large farms nearby, with beans and beets and corn and wheat such as in this field.

I flew from Saginaw to Chicago and there had to make the hike from the F Concourse to B. To liven up the treks between terminals, O'Hare has created visually and architecturally interesting walkways decorated with various kinds of bold and flashy art.

Because of numerous thunderstorms along the Atlantic Coast, Air Traffic Control would not allow many flights to leave Chicago. Our flight, originally scheduled for 3:25 PM, was delayed three times, and it was after 8:00 PM and the sun was setting as we finally taxied out for takeoff to NYC.
