Maryknoll Retreat and Meetings 2012

Travel from Hua Hin to Bangkok

For most of the participants of the Maryknoll Asia South meetings, today was a travel day, from the retreat center in Hua Hin back to Bangkok where they caught flights to their home destinations. The Maryknoll Sisters, however, remained at the retreat center for a day of meetings before returning to Bangkok on Wednesday morning.

Loading the vans Because some people had late morning flights, breakfast was moved up to 6:00 AM so that the vans going to the airport could get away at 7:00 AM. Most of the group turned out to see them off. A bus going to the Maryknoll office in Bangkok left at 8:00 AM.

Refueling on the way This van stopped once on the three-hour journey back to Bangkok for refueling. The van uses NPG instead of gasoline and diesel and there are fewer refueling stations for NPG although many more than in the United States.

Checking in
There were nine of us traveling together and we divided into two groups for easier check-in at the Bangkok Airways counters in Bangkok.

Inside the terminal The Bangkok airport has a large dioarama on the air side of passport control that shows their creation myth. Many people pose in front of it as a dramatic picture of something you don't see elsewhere. In airline lounge Bangkok Airways is one of the few airlines that provides a lounge for all passengers, no matter what class they are flying. They provide food and drinks and wi-fi, and our group took advantage of all of it.

In Phnom Penh Once we got through passport control and customs in Phnom Penh, our group gathered in front of the terminal to await the arrival of three tuk-tuks we had arranged to meet us.

Tuk-tuk ride home With all our luggage--most of it for Dee Dungy and Maria Montello--we could only put three people in a tuk-tuk and even that was crowded. While Kevin Conroy took pictures, Sam Stanton and Bob Wynne enjoyed the ride.
