Trip to United States

20 September to 13 October 2011

11-13 October 2011 (Tuesday-Thursday)

Today was actually two days with one long night in between. It started off in New York City at LaGuardia Airport for a flight to Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C. From there I flew to Tokyo and somewhere west of Alaska Tuesday changed to Wednesday as we crossed the date line and we landed in Tokyo on Wednesday afternoon. From there I flew to Bangkok and I had to stay overnight in the airport there before catching the first flight out to Phnom Penh on Thursday morning.

Today when checked luggage can't be locked, delicate and valuable goods, like cameras and laptops, are put into carry-on luggage. But on small regional jets, like the Bombardier we flew to Washington, DC, larger carry-ons have to be checked at the gate. The baggage handler wasn't too concerned about valuable or delicate items but just dropped each suitcase from a height of three feet onto the chute that took it down to a waiting cart.

After departing LaGuardia, we made a 270º turn that took us over Harlem and gave a picture of LaGuardia (foreground) and of Manhattan with Central Park appearing as a long dark strip. It is amazing to see just how big Central Park is.

One of the odder airport designs in my experience is at Dulles International at Washington where passengers are taken in these large transporter vehicles from one terminal to another, crossing active taxiways and mixing with the aircraft.

From Washington to Tokyo we had a Boeing 777 and I couldn't figure out how to use the control buttons that showed through a hole in the armrest. They wouldn't give the results I wanted. Then I found out there was a whole control unit under the armrest which had to be lifted up. It certainly wasn't obvious.

AFter thirteen hours of flying we arrived at 3:00 PM Wednesday afternoon in Tokyo only to find that the flight to Bangkok, United 837, had been canceled. United put me on All Nippon Airways instead for the sector to Bangkok.

We got to Bangkok about midnight and I slept on some chairs till 5:30 AM when I checked in for the flight to Phnom Penh and we arrived there at 9:00 AM Thursday morning to end this trip.
