There was no weekend break at all for the participants in this Global Council. We met all day Saturday and this Sunday was another full day. We started with liturgy in the morning and then spent the day with Marie Dennis, the head of Maryknoll Office of Global Concerns in Washington, D.C. |
This morning, the Global Council participants had a liturgy at which Charlie Dittmeier presided. The candidates for the lay mission class of 2010 were also invited to join the gathering in the Bethany chapel. |
Marie Dennis has devoted her adult life to advocacy and working for peace and justice throughout the world. She is also part of the leadership of Pax Christi International, a well-respected peace group which has worked much in the Middle East. |
Each day lunch is brought in to save working time. The food has been good and the time together gives the participants an opportunity to get to know each other better outside of the meeting rooms. |

This is the Bethany building, the headquarters of the Maryknoll Lay Missioners. Initially a family estate, it was donated to the Maryknoll Sisters who used it for a retirement home, adding several extensions to the original building. It became the center for the lay missioners when they were formed as an independent group in 1985. |
