Trip to Sabah, East Malaysia

14-22 October 2010

20 October (Wednesday)

The organizers must have felt we are rather wimpy and don't want to work us too hard because we had a lot of trips and special outings in the week's schedule. This morning we went to Manukan Island and then in the afternoon had a meeting, a prayer service, a Chinese dinner, and then a video of a signed liturgy.

Most of the delegates stayed at the Marina Court Resort Condominiums and some of them had a view of the harbor at Kota Kinabalu.
Morning on the Sabah harbor
We got on and off buses quite a bit in traveling to the various sites we visited for fun and for education.
Boarding the bus
We had three boats like these to take us to Manukan Island. The trip took about 20 minutes and young guys piloting made the trip fast and exciting. They also insisted everyone wear a life jacket, an unusual requirement in Asia.
Boat ride to the island
The island is close enough to Kota Kinabalu for day trippers and has a walking trails and places to eat but most of all beautiful beaches.

Upon our return, Charlie Dittmeier had another session on liturgy for deaf people and then a prayer service in place of the more usual mass. The Hong Kong and Macau group signed their version of the Our Father.

Joe and Eleanor McLaughlin were leaving early in the morning so Geraldine Chin (left) presented them with some gifts to show our appreciation.
Goodbye gifts
Dinner this evening was an enjoyable affair in a Chinese restaurant.

The last event of a long day was the presentation of a video by Fr. Harry Stocks of a mass in sign language.
