Trip to United States

28 June to 30 July 2010

29-30 July 2010
(Thursday-Friday)

Thursday was supposed to be a day for picking up materials not available in Cambodia and for meetings.  Instead the whole day was spent traveling from Tokyo to Bangkok via Phuket.  Friday was spent at BNH hospital getting a physical exam before the flight back to Cambodia.

The flight from Tokyo did not go directly to Bangkok but made a first stop in the tourist destination of Phuket.  This picture is of the airport there, with an overcrowded waiting room serving ten departure gates.

The normally 25-minute taxi ride from the Bangkok airport to the Maryknoll office took 1:40 hours Friday night because of the traffic.  On Friday morning, I finally had to get off this bus, stuck in traffic, and walk to the SkyTrain terminal to get to BNH for my appointment with the doctor there.

The hospitals in Thailand are heavily involved with medical tourism.  BNH doesn't have the McDonald's or Starbucks inside as do some hospitals, but it does have valet parking.

The array of international flags outside BNH gives indication of its goal of serving foreigners from around the world at about 1/8 the cost of what a procedure would cost in the United States.  After the exam, I caught an afternoon flight back to Phnom Penh to end this month-long journey.
