Trip to United States

28 June to 30 July 2010

21-22 July 2010
(Wednesday-Thursday)

On Wednesday I basically worked at my cousin's house all day. A lot of work connected with the deaf program in Phnom Penh has followed me by e-mail. In the evening Colleen English and her husband Allen came over for dessert. Thursday was an especially busy day with many different things going on.

On most trips to Louisville, I schedule a mass with the Carmelite Sisters at their monastery on Newburg Road.  My cousin, Sr. Mary Terese, is one of the sisters there.  This is a picture after mass with my Aunt Mary (right), Sister Mary's grandmother, and Mary's friend from Pewee Valley.

After leaving the Carmelites, I went to Nazareth Home nearby to visit Tom Ryan, the deaf deacon.  Fr. Bob Osborne, a good friend, was getting ready for mass there, along with two residents, Fr. Gene Zoeller and Fr. Bill Martin, and it was good to see them also.

Then I stopped at my sister Ann's house which has just been remodeled.  I had not yet seen Ann on this trip but found her at home this time.

At lunch time, I met with Fr. John Burke, a Louisville priest and chaplain at Assumption High School.  I met John in Cambodia several months ago when he accompanied a group of Assumption students there to visit a school they had raised money to build.

My next stop was the house of Norma Lewis, the doyenne of the sign language interpreters of Kentucky.  Norma and I have been friends and worked together for many years.

To end a very interesting and rewarding day, a group of my cousins came over to the English house where I am staying.  The Dittmeier relatives are an extraordinary family, and it is always wonderful to meet with some of them.
