Meetings Day 2

16 January 2009

Kevin Conroy
On the modified schedule for the meeting days, the liturgy was celebrated at 8:00 AM, right after breakfast. Today Kevin Conroy, an associate priest from Cambodia, was the presider.
Maryknoll Sisters at Hua Hin
The "charism" groups continued meeting today, at least the Maryknoll Sisters and the Priests and Brothers groups met. All the sisters present for the meeting posed for a group photo at the morning break.
Maryknoll Priests and Brothers meeting
The Maryknoll Society members, priests and brothers, met in the morning also. Both the sisters group and the priests and brothers group followed up on decisions and themes deriving from their general assemblies in October, 2008.
Vince Giorno
To begin the afternoon when the Maryknoll Asia South (MAS) group was to look at its work for the coming year, Vince Giorno was invited to speak about trends he sees in the Church and especially in church work in Asia. Vince was formerly a Maryknoll Brother stationed in Thailand for two years. He left Maryknoll, married, and has lived in Thailand ever since. He works as an editor and acting manager of UCAN (the Union of Catholic Asian News), and so he is exposed to all sorts of input and ideas that he offered to us today.
Doug Venne from Bangladesh
Fr. Doug Venne, who works in Bangladesh, listens to one of the presentations during the day-long meetings.
Sofia giving report
Part of the agenda for today was reports from the various Maryknoll groups and our partner groups, especially about major assemblies and chapter meetings held in recent months. Sofia, from the Quebec Foreign Mission Society, reported on their meeting in Canada.
Alice giving report
Alice Marianito, who works with Maryknoll in Cambodia, reported on the general assembly being held this week by the Philippines Catholic Lay Mission group.
Singing during the social hour
After a day of meetings, a good number of those attending the retreat and business meetings gathered for a song fest during the social hour before supper.
Thanking the retreat center staff
Because we are such a large group, the retreat center must hire extra staff to the cooking and cleaning and other chores during our stay. We always meet with them on one of our last nights to thank them and give them a little gift for their dedicated work for us.
An ice cream trip
After the supper this evening, the Philippines Catholic Lay Mission group invited the Cambodian Maryknoll Lay Missioners to a nearby ice cream shop for a treat. Pictured are Susan Sporl, Lisa Pirie, Celina Campas, and Alice Marianito.
