These two days were travel days, about 37 hours of travel all together. I left Louisville early Tuesday morning--or was supposed to--but a horrendous rainstorm delayed all incoming and outgoing air traffic so we were late leaving Kentucky. I should have missed my plane to Tokyo in Chicago but that aircraft was delayed by mechanical problems and left three hours late so I still caught it. Then in Tokyo there was another delay. We finally got to Bangkok at 1:30 AM and I slept in the airport until 5:00 AM when I could get an onward boarding pass for the flight to Phnom Penh arriving on Thursday morning. |
This aircraft in Chicago had mechanical difficulties and boarding was delayed three hours. Even after we were on, they were still loading food carts for the aft galley. |

The 747 flight from Chicago to Tokyo is 12½ hours nonstop, flying up along the Aleutian Islands. Still on the ground here in Chicago, I was anticipating missing my flight from Tokyo to Bangkok. |
When we got to Bangkok, this 747 to carry us to Bangkok was also delayed so we managed to make the flight OK although we were late arriving. |

The worst part of each 35-39 hour flight from Louisville to Bangkok is arriving in Bangkok at 10:00 PM and not leaving for Phnom Penh until 7:00 AM the next morning. One of my favorite sleeping places is on the floor behind the ventilator behind the departures monitors. It's a little darker back there and out of the traffic flow. |
After sleeping a few hours on the floor, it's down to this counter at the Transfer Desk to get an onward boarding pass for the last 55-minute flight from Bangkok to Phnom Penh. |
Someone who has not flown for a while may be surprised to see the overhead warning indicators on new aircraft. All flights are non-smoking now so the "No Smoking" lights have been replaced with a notice to turn off electronic devices. |
When I got to Phnom Penh on Thursday morning, the computer showed that one of my suitcases was still in Chicago. I had to go out to the airport the next day and take it home in a tuk-tuk. |
