While I am speaking at parishes on the East Coast in July, I am staying at Bethany, the headquarters of the Maryknoll Lay Missioners, a third Maryknoll campus located next to the center for the Maryknoll sisters and larger complex that is the main Maryknoll headquarters of the Maryknoll priests and brothers. Bethany is an old estate house that was formerly used by the sisters as a retirement home. Later it was sold to the lay missioners for one dollar by the priests group to use as the offices and training center for lay people going into mission. |

In 2007 this new logo and name was chosen for marketing purposes by the Maryknoll Mission Association of the Faithful, the legal name of the lay mission group that was chosen at its founding as an official group separate from the priests and brothers group. The MMAF name was seen as confusing and hard to explain to potential recruits and donors, so the Maryknoll Lay Missioners name became what is used on all materials seen by the public. |

This is the front porch of Bethany. The building is quite old and needs repairs and its configuration is not the most efficient for the needs of the Maryknoll Lay Missioners but it is what we have and we're happy to have it. |

This time when I arrived at Bethany, I found my name assigned to Room 305. Thinking it was one of the regular individual rooms, I went up and down the third-floor corridor but couldn't find it. Then the happy thought occurred to me that perhaps they had assigned one of the small apartments to me, and when I checked that corridor, I found that was true. It's a real luxury to have one of the apartments when staying at Bethany, with their extra room and privacy and a private bath. |
