Medical Tests, second day
• Medical tourism was featured on Sixty Minutes, the US TV show, last year, and there have been quite a few articles about it in the magazines and papers that I have seen here in Asia.  The basic concept is taking a trip to another country with the idea of getting medical work done while there.  The underlying reason for the travel is usually cost.  Usually the cost for an operation in one of the hospitals in Bangkok that accommodates foreigners is about one-eighth the cost of what the same operation would be in the U.S.  That's quite an incentive to travel abroad.  Much of the work is cosmetic, but many patients come for transplants, heart operations, etc.  Probably anything that can be done in the U.S. can be done in Bangkok more cheaply and with excellent nursing and supportive care that hospitals can't afford to offer in North America.

• King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand celebrates sixty years on the Thai throne in June. Throughout the kingdom, grand preparations are underway for the celebration for this revered figure.
