Scenes from Rome #2

While in Rome for a meeting about working with Catholic deaf people in Southeast Asia, I had a chance to visit some of the major tourist sits connected with Christianity.  Also visited were some of the ancient Roman sites we studied diligently in our classical history classes!

Most of these pictures were taken at the Wednesday audience of Pope Benedict attended by 50,000 of his friends! Out of the 50,000 numbered tickets, I had #106 which put us up in front on his left side.

Cardinal Law at St. Mary Major

Cardinal Bernard Law, now the rector of St. Mary Major Basilica, welcomed us there.  He was a strong supporter of the Catholic deaf group in Boston.

Facade of St. Peter's Basilica

A figure of Christ set directly above the main entrance of St. Peter's Basilica. I don't know the other two figures.

Pope arriving for the audience

The pope arrives for the audience in his "local" popemobile. He has another used for foreign trips.

50,000 friends of the pope

St. Peter's Square was jammed with 50,000 pilgrims, friends, and tourists who came for the 10:30 AM audience.

The pope's apartment

The papal apartments where he gives his Sunday blessings. I met Pope John Paul II in his apartments in 1996.

The pope greeting the crowd

After the audience, the pope greets the VIPs on the right side, then comes here to the left side, and then greets people with disabilities.
