Travel from Cambodia to Thailand

Sunday, 24 August

The Maryknollers in Thailand traveled to the retreat center today because all of Thailand is having their own separate meeting tomorrow, the day that most of the people from Cambodia and Vietnam will be traveling to Hua Hin.  The missioners in Thailand are separated enough geographically that it is difficult for them to meet so they take advantage of their coming here to have a country meeting.

Three of the Maryknoll sisters from Phnom Penh and I traveled together to Bangkok, and then one of them came with me the rest of the way to Hua Hin. We left Phnom Penh at 9:30 AM, arrived in Bangkok at 10:30 AM, took a taxi to the bus station and caught the 12:20 PM bus which took 2½ hours to reach Hua Hin.  After some unpacking, I set up the Internet connections, checked e-mail, and then went to dinner with another regional coordinator to plan agendas for Tuesday's meetings.

Monday, 25 August

Today was a meeting day for the people from Thailand but a preparation day for me. I spent the morning and afternoon setting up an agenda and reading all the background papers connected with the various parts of the agenda.

Throughout the day, other Maryknollers from Cambodia and Vietnam trickled in, and now probably everyone has arrived and is ready for the Sending Group meetings that begin tomorrow.

Maryknoll Lay Missioners Meeting

Tuesday, 26 August 2003

When we gather in Hua Hin each year, there are always different meetings scheduled on the various days, everyone taking advantage of the fact that all of us are there to get together in different groups.  This first official day of meetings was set aside for what are known as the Sending Groups.  Maryknoll is an umbrella organization that has subgroups for the priests and brothers, the sisters, and the lay people.  Today all of them met separately to discuss business and plans particular to their group or charism.  The Maryknoll Lay Missioners had the most business because of our recent general assembly, and we met the longest, from 8:45 after morning prayer to 4:45 PM when we ended with a group photo.

Maryknoll Mekong Missions Meetings

Wednesday, 27 August 2003

Today was the first day of the Maryknoll Mekong Missions (MMM) meetings. This is all the members in Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam who gather to talk about some of the vision and theory of mission. Along that line, we started the morning with a two-hour reflection on what calls us to mission and motivates us to continue. Then we started on the business of the MMM, specifically finances. Because of large budget cuts in the proposed budgets for 2004, we are having to look at the way we meet and how we finance those meetings. There was good discussion on the values behind the meetings which must be balanced against their cost in money and time.

Marie Dennis explaining the United NationsIn the afternoon we turned our attention to the topic of advocacy. Marie Dennis, the head of Maryknoll's Office of Global Concerns, lead the session this afternoon, explaining about the work of the office and then about the structure and operations of the United Nations. Maryknoll has traditionally been active at the U.N., and in 1998 received consultative status there. Luise Ahrens and Mike Bassano are holding the U.N. diagram.

Small group discussionThis morning Marie Dennis from the Maryknoll Office of Global Concerns presented the second half of her workshop on advocacy about issues of justice and peace. We broke up into groups according to the types of ministry we are involved in (AIDS, women, trafficking, education, labor, etc.) and then presented the results of the discussions, all the nuances and suggestions that might help OGC to put together better documents for their lobbying and educational efforts.

The afternoon today was officially a free period, but many of us had meetings that required our presence. Still I found time to walk on the beach for forty-five minutes, long enough to get drenched by an afternoon rainstorm that appeared at the far end of the walk.

Exercises at morning prayer

Friday, 29 August 2003

The morning started off with spiritual and physical exercises accompanied by music and prayer outdoors. Some members are definitely more limber and nimble than others! This morning prayer was led by the Filipino members of our group. The different country groups have been taking turns leading morning prayer and planning the liturgies each day. The different styles and emphases of the various prayers certainly preclude any monotony and uniformity!

Jim NoonanAt the meetings, we first discussed our relationship with the local church in the various countries where we work. Maryknoll tries always to work with the local church and hierarchy but sometimes there are misunderstandings because Maryknoll in the MMM tends to work in service of the poor rather than in administering sacraments in a local parish.  Later we explained the ministry structures in each of our countries, to give an overview of our work, especially to the many newer people we have now. Jim Noonan here explains the work of the Cambodia Mission Team.

Regina Pellicore and Arlene SaleMorning prayer and liturgy today was organized by the Maryknollers and partners from southern Thailand.  At our meetings in the morning, we continued our discussion on shared expenses, adding updated numbers and proposals after several overnight consultations and discussions.  The basic problem is that up till now, Thailand has been picking up most of the charges for the Hua Hin gatherings.  That made sense in the early days when technically all the Society members were in the Thailand unit, but as the MMM grew and expanded, the mechanisms for paying for the meetings didn't.  Now we are trying to apportion the costs more equitably among the different countries and the different sending groups.

We also spent some time discussing the annual retreat held in January.  It has grown to such proportions that we need to limit the number of people who can attend (95±) and find extra rooms for them to stay in.  The advocacy committee also reported and proposed some ideas after this week's discussions with Marie Dennis.  Then we had liturgy at 11:15 AM and the week of meetings was officially over.  The first ones to leave were three from Cambodia who got a van straight to the Bangkok airport.  (Photo: Regina Pellicore and Arlene Sale in a break from the discipline of the meetings.)
