Chris Keavney is a North American technologist who, after several years of work in laboratory research in solar energy, decided to join Maryknoll as a lay missioner to work on promoting the technology at the grass-roots level. He has set up a workshop at the Institute for Rural Education in Peru, in which he will show local farmers the ways that exist to use the fierce sun of the Peruvian altiplano for cooking, heating, and electricity. Chris believes that appropriate technologies, adapted to local needs, can help people realize their full potential as human beings, and wants to fight the tendency to force development into foreign models, making the people serve it, instead of the other way around.
