Maryknoll Society Chapter Meeting

3-15 February 2002

From 31 January to 17 February I was in Bangkok, Thailand helping with the Maryknoll Society chapter meeting. The first few days we were setting up equipment and rooms, and then for the next two weeks, I worked as the recording secretary of the chapter, taking the notes at all the sessions.

The Maryknoll Society (the priests and brothers group) has a general chapter every six years, a meeting of all the superiors of the Maryknoll regions around the world, to discuss issues and problems and to plot the Society's direction for the next six years. They also elect a new General Council to lead the Society for that term.

This year the chapter planning committee decided to hold the chapter in two sessions or "moments," the first for two weeks in Bangkok. Prior to that all the delegates took part in exposure trips to Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Thailand, and Vietnam to learn more about Maryknoll's work in Asia before the formal work sessions begin.

The planning committee met first for a week in Vietnam and then came to Bangkok to begin the actual on-site work.

Bob and Charlie in the meeting room This is the work station in the chapter meeting for the two of us who were the recording secretaries, actually taking the minutes of the proceedings. The two weeks were MUCH busier than I had anticipated--I was working 15-16 hours a day, seven days a week--so I never got to update the home page here. On Sunday, 17 February I returned back to Phnom Penh so the page updates should be regular again now.
