Christmas Day is a work day in Cambodia, but after work all the Maryknollers and some attached friends who would be alone for Christmas gathered at the Maryknoll office for a Christmas dinner. We had about forty people from nine or ten different countries. As they arrived, we inivited people upstairs to the porch where they could meet each other.
Steve is our omni-present musician and before everyone went downstairs to eat, he led us in a couple Christmas carols to set the scene for a Christmas dinner.
Erin (in green), a deaf scholar researching the deaf community in Cambodia as part of a Fulbright-National Geographic program, was with us tonight so we also had the carols in sign language, led by Karen Bortvedt (middle).
Downstairs we had a lovely dinner with a really delightful group of people. No one was in a hurry to leave even though the next day was a work day again. |
