Christmas Mass at St. Joseph Church

25 December, 2011

The Sunday morning congregation that meets in an old hall at St. Joseph Church is about one third the size of the Saturday night group. It is a more family oriented community and a little more energetic and friendly.

The day started off ominously: in addition to the BLARING speakers for the Khmer mass right outside our windows, when I opened a cabinet where we store things I found a dead rat, complete with maggots, smelling up the place. Then we found that the top of the altar was missing, not yet returned by the workmen who were supposed to be enlarging it. Then because we anticipated more people for Christmas, we carried 128 chairs up to the hall. It was a long morning.

The Catholic Church compound where we have the English mass is really the old seminary campus, one of the few Catholic structures that survived the Khmer Rouge. We use an old hall in the rear building. the French and Koreans use the small old seminary chapel, and the Khmer congregation uses a large hall in a front building.

Khmer Christmas mass outside

The eight o'clock Khmer mass was still going on when I arrived to set up the English mass. Because of large Christmas crowds, the mass was held before an outdoor stage on the church property and 1,000 chairs were put out.

Hall for English mass

This is the hall in the rear building, on the second floor, where the English community meets on Sunday mornings. We more than doubled our numbers this week because of the large Christmas participation. This was the first time I presided at a liturgy in this hall since we finished renovating it.

Nativity set at St. Joseph Church

We bought this nativity set last year when we had to carry it from church to the other on Christmas weekend because we had only the one set. This year we bought another set so now we have one at each site.
