Global Democratic Primary

9 February 2008

Donut Shop voting station

For this primary campaign, Democrats here in Phnom Penh were able to vote locally for the first time, instead of mailing an absentee ballot. A new system of primary balloting was instituted this year which allowed registered Democrats overseas to vote either online or in person. In Phnom Penh, the polling place was a U.S. Donuts shop, an appropriately named venue.

Registering Democratic voters

Volunteers staffed the registration table outside the polling place to sign in those who wanted to vote. Voters were required to show their passports. Jim McLaughlin (seated, red shirt) is one of the Maryknoll Lay Missioners who worked at the polls with his wife Roberta. The voting place was open from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Democrats Abroad is quite active in Phnom Penh.

Inside the polling place

Inside the donut shop, the ballot box was a large metal box. After depositing their ballots, voters were offered free donut holes from the shop!

Sign for Obama

Barack Obama had a good number of supporters in evidence. They had a couple earlier rallies in addition to putting out this banner today.
