Today was relatively unscheduled and I was able to work at the Kordsmeier house, updating the website and preparing e-mails to be sent the next time we went into town. Then in the evening we had a cookout at the Lachowsky home on the outskirts of Conway. The Lachowskys' daughter Elizabeth is a Maryknoll Lay Missioner working in Thailand.

When most of the Lachowsky family had arrived, Charlie showed them pictures of their daughter Elizabeth and her husband and children in Hua Hin, Thailand. Then it was time to begin eating. The main dish was deep-fried fish, freshly caught in the local lakes. |
Most of the Lachowsky family live near their parents' home, along a semi-private road which creates almost a private subdivision. They gather frequently to eat together and enjoy each other as family. |
A tradition at the Lachowsky home is eating homegrown watermelon at meals like this, and this is the way they do it, each person staking out a spot along the porch rail and spitting watermelon seeds off into the yard. |
"Red" Lachowsky, Elizabeth's father, showed off his cellar full of canned fruits and vegetables to Lucille Kordsmeier. |
When the first watermelon was dispatched rather quickly, Red went to his garden to pick another so he could send some home with his guests. |
In his cellar where he keeps the canned vegetables, Red also makes wine from several types of grapes he grows in a yard behind his house. |
