Sources for Forming
Political Opinions

9 October 2003

Recently a priest colleague asked me what I read and where I get information to keep up with world events and to be able to take a stance on issues.  I appreciated his question because it is vitally important that good people learn about situations in the political and economic and religious world; develop informed opinions; and then act on them.  Progress in justice and peace issues depends on many good people having a voice and taking a stand.

Here are some of the sources I use for keeping myself informed. Maybe they will be helpful for you also.

The New York Times

I subscribe to the online edition of the New York Times and receive the major headlines of the paper in my e-mailbox every day of the week.  The headlines of all the Op/Ed pieces from the editorial section also appear. Each headline has a one-sentence description below it and is connected by a link to the full article in the online edition of the New York Times.

I don't read all the articles but the headlines and descriptions are enough to point me to many that are very helpful.  I tend to agree with a lot of the positions of the NYT editors, at least in the area of politics and economics, and find that their editorial and opinion pieces give a lot of information and background.

A subscription to the online edition of the New York Times is free.  Go to http://www.nytimes.com/ to subscribe.

Sojourners

Sojourners is a weekly magazine promoting justice and peace based on Christian values.  Long a standby of the action-oriented Christian, it now has an electronic version called Sojomail.  The electronic version, an e-mail-zine, I find extremely helpful for insightful articles, good quotations for my website, and suggestions for actions to promote the reign of God in our world.  A subscription to the e-mail version is free.  Click here to subscribe: http://www.sojo.net/index.cfm?action=sojomail.subscribe.

MoveOn.org

MoveOn logo

MoveOn.org is one of the most factual and helpful websites I have found, and they are extremely influential. They provide a great deal of information about the workings of our government, and especially the Bush administration, and they also offer very practical and concrete--and easy--ways to express dissatisfaction with the deceit and manipulation of the Bush White House.  The website URL is moveon.org, but they also have an informative and useful e-mail newsletter that comes directly to your mail box.  To subscribe, click on http://moveon.org/moveonbulletin .
