Action on Debt Relief
27 August 2007

Many people hear of the plight of undeveloped countries and wonder what they can do. Lobbying for good legislation is extremely important. And it is easy to do. Call to the House of Representatives number below and ask for your representative's office by name or by Congressional District.

It doesn't matter whom you talk to at that office. Just say you are a constituent and you want your representative "to co-sponsor and vote for the Jubilee Act, HR 2634, to reduce international debt." You don't have to explain it, defend it or anything like that. Just ask your representative to vote for it.

The following alert is from our colleagues at the Jubilee USA Network:

Send a message to your representative and urge them to co-sponsor the new Jubilee Act, HR 2634, which provides for greater responsibility in lending and expanded cancellation of debts owed to the U.S. and the international financial institutions by impoverished countries. For many impoverished countries, cancellation of their debts is necessary in order for them to meet the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. The Jubilee Act, if passed, would help them do that.

You can call your member of Congress in Washington, D.C. using the Congressional switchboard at 202-224-3121.

For more information about the Jubilee Act and ways you can inform yourself, your friends, faith community, or local leaders about this important legislation, visit the Jubilee Act information page.

ALSO, check the Jubilee USA website for more information on the “Cancel Debt Fast,” a wonderful way to connect with the work to end the crush of debt on the world’s most impoverished, vulnerable people.
