11 August 2004 Benoit Duchateau-Arminjon, the founder and president of Krousar Thmey (New Family)signs an agreement with H.E. Mr. Kem Gunawadh, the General Director of the Cambodian Ministry of Information, for Krousar Thmey to provide sign language interpreters for a weekly news program. This will be the first time that a regular program in sign language has been provided for deaf television viewers in Cambodia.

Follow-up: This past week I was talking with one of the staff at Krousar Thmey about the preparation for interpreting the Cambodian news on national television. The staff had asked the government television station if I could be part of the preparations because I am the only person in the country with experience with sign language interpreting on television. The station refused. And even worse--but not surprisingly--the station is now asking for money: money for make-up for the interpreters (which is totally unnecessary); money for cassettes for the filming; etc. Sigh....
Kosal (second from left) and Ms. Neang Phalla (third from left) reply to questions from reporters about the new program to interpret the television news for deaf people in Cambodia. Kosal is the general manager of all Krousar Thmey's many programs for children in Cambodia, and Phalla is the director of all Krousar Thmey's education programs.
