Deaf Awareness Day in Cambodia, 2004

24 September

For the last three years, Deaf Awareness Day has been celebrated in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Annually deaf communities around the world use this occasion--normally the last weekend in September--to showcase the talents and abilities of deaf people and to make the hearing community more aware of the needs and hopes of deaf people.

This year Friday, 24 September was chosen instead of the usual Saturday or Sunday because it is Constitution Day, a public holiday, when more people might be free to participate in the activities. In the morning a march was arranged from Wat Lanka to Hun Sen Park, a visible demonstration of the presence of deaf people in Cambodian society. In the afternoon a formal ceremony was held with speakers from the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Deaf Development Program and Krousar Thmey.

Deaf Awareness Day was funded by the Finnish Association of the Deaf, Maryknoll, and UNESCO. Thanks to all our donors!
