Deaf Education Consultant
in Svay Rieng Province

18-22 October 2004

Two deaf boys in Svay RiengThe Deaf Development Program decided to evaluate its teaching program (basic literacy and sign language) as it nears the end of its first batch of students to go through the two-year program. A deaf consultant was hired from Sweden, a woman who is herself a teacher in a deaf school in Stockholm. After interviewing many people and observing classes in Phnom Penh and in Kampot Province, Kerstin Olsson and Åsa Helmersson, Kerstin's interpreter, went to Svay Rieng Province from Tuesday, 26 October to Thursday, 27 October. There they observed the teachers and students in the DDP classroom and got a better feel and understanding of the rural area of Cambodia, outside of Phnom Penh.
