The Cambodian Disabled People's Organization (CDPO) was founded in the mid-1990s as a representative organization to bring the voice of people with disabilities to the public forum. Troubled by various problems, CDPO suspended its work for two years but on 11 October 2004 was relaunched with a new administrative structure. CDPO is important as the only membership organization for people with disabilities in Cambodia. Through CDPO, PWDs can speak for themselves to government, the NGO community, and society at large.
The guest of honor and main speaker was His Excellency Ith Sam Heng, the Minister of MOSAVY, the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterns, and Youth.
Re-launching CDPO
11 October 2004
Every formal ceremony in Cambodia has the same elements and the same format: the blue backdrop with white letters; the photographs of the king and queen; the row of chairs for the VIPs; and when a government minister (cabinet official) is present, a heavy wooden chair and table. Present today were representatives from various NGOs connected with disabilities.
Mr. Ngin Saorath is the new Executive Director of the new CDPO. The restructured CDPO is much smaller than before and will focus mainly on advocacy and lobbying rather than direct services to PWDs.
